My Birthday

Me an' Mom (Thank you for my Birthday calls Mom O' mine!)

It was lovely.
I got birthday cards galore from all my children!
And phone calls from:
Grama
Dad
Mom
Courtney
Diane
Dad L
Mom L
Em
Molly, Nick, and Lydi
Kelli R...

I got Starbucks.

And I got to pick up my Beloved at the airport *sigh*

Went to Hobby Lobby (which I didn't know we HAD West of the Rockies!)
And Target.
Tell me, what could be better than that?
Oh yeah, I got a vacuum cleaner!!! (though I think that was more of a coincidence, not so much a birthday present - HA!)
I was treated to lunch out,
and then my day was topped off with dinner at Char and Hannah's!
(complete with chocolate cake resplendent in mocha frosting and 32 candles)

Thank you thank you THANK YOU for all your well-wishes and calls!
I am so thankful for a little more time to
revel in the Lord's daily mercies :-)

Put Off Long Enough

I'm not sure but this may be the first official pregnancy picture with baby 7!
So who wants the baby Scoop?
I am beginning to nest.  I have passed the 34 week mark and am feeling
countdown-ish.  So I am.  Counting down, that is, until the day (or night) arrives
when we make this little one's acquaintance.
I can hardly wait!!!

This pregnancy has been "boringly normal" which is the best thing a woman can
hear from her doctor or midwife.
I have settled on a couple of dear midwives near to us who have been working together
for 25 years or so.  I am currently hoping to deliver baby at home on Marvel Hill
(I have hot water again since last week - Yippee!!)
but they also have a comfortable little birth center we can drive to if we so choose at the
last moment.  I am very thankful for God's provision in these women, and look forward to
seeing tiny 7's story unfold at the end of this chapter.

One thing especially different about this pregnancy is that I have been feeling all baby's
limb movement at the front of my belly.  It's been fun to feel more feet and elbows, but I
can't make out exactly what's what.  My midwife thinks head is down which is all I was really
wanting to be reassured of!

Other than that, I am frantic trying to finish Bryce's baby scrapbook and Christmas stocking
as well as a few things I have personally put my hand to creating just for this new little person I love.
Between school and chores and life, 6 more weeks doesn't seem like very much time to wrap up
the details!

Oh yeah.  Then there's the name conundrum.  I'm open to any and all suggestions for either gender.
Preferably your favorites, but then, AJ has already contributed Khubilai Khan.
And Hans Solo (he is helpful like that).
So really, anything is fair game at this point! HA!

More than anything I would be blessed to have your prayers for my time of labor and delivery.
I would be so grateful to go into it with peace and grace - no fear or anxiety.
I know I can count on you my precious friends!

I love you much,
~Me

Shoes to die for!

(sorry, I couldn't think of a better title for this post!)

I am not a fashionista.

I am not even a shoe horse.
I AM, however in love with these:

Last October while on our New England Fall color trip,
we visited Lake Champlain.
While roaming through Burlington Vermont
I spotted these shoes made in Spain -
NEVER had I seen shoes like this!
It was a sad case of love at first sight.

OH the colors!
The elements and design!
*Be STILL my beating heart *

Don't I have a use for a pair of these?
A NEED?
Can I invent a reason to buy a pair?
Could I possibly decide WHICH pair to buy?

I just wanted to share my window-shopping with you
because someone out there should be able to appreciate my taste!

Oh my Darling El Naturalista!  Must you provoke my senses so?

(and my budget?)

You KNOW I am a common rubber boot kind of girl,
but you make me imagine I could change........... just maybe?
For YOU?

ok.
For ME?

THE most adorable face EVER!

I am EXTREMELY biased, of course, but STILL!!!!!
Just LOOK at those little pearly white teeth *swoon*

Okay, I know that was an inexcusable amount of capitals, but do you know what I got today?
A vacation.
A retreat.
All completely unexpected and unaccounted for!

It started with 10 hours sleep (waking only once to roll over - does that count for waking?)
Followed by two girls and a baby boy joining me in bed for a wee bit.
Then a Chocolate Chip/Walnut Pancake breakfast made and served by Zachary (!)
Here's the thing:  5 children decided to play Lego's upstairs for several hours and
during that time I stayed in my Pajamas;
cuddled number 6 and smothered him in kisses;
read and soaked in every little piece of Romans 9-12...

See why it was such a blissful day?

Oh!
I forgot the Red Mug!  Full of mocha and topped with whipped cream.  Ahhh..........
After lunch, kiddos paraded up to play at outside at Uncle's,
and babies napped.
Me?   I stayed in my pajamas!  And I worked on Bryce-boy's Christmas stocking.
I prepared Math drills (stapled and hole-punched) for the next couple months.
I had the privilege to talk with my darling girl-friend UNINTERRUPTED!
Made dinner in the quiet stillness.

You know?  I think it was the pajamas and quiet that made it feel like a holiday.
Quiet is so scarce - I can't ever quite hear myself think, let alone read and digest what I just read!

That leads me to another train of thoughts that I'd like to post.
Stay tuned and perhaps I'll remember past tonight.
If we're lucky.

For now I reel from the strangeness of all the quiet I gorged on today.
I feel like a Quiet Glutton! HA!
Well.  All good things have to come to an end, and the quiet left some hours ago
with the return of something even better...

My children.

I am, among women,
rich indeed!

It's the Little Things

Sometimes the little things seem like BIG things, you know?
Today was like that for me.

One little kink in my day felt like an insurmountable obstacle.
And that's only talking about 1.

It's amazing to me
how perceptive an 8 year old little boy can be:

It's nice to be loved.
Sometimes that's no small thing.

Through the Red Mug

The Red Mug.

It likes coffee with hot chocolate and half n' half best.

But is learning to appreciate tea.

The Red Mug prefers Peach or Peppermint with Agave stirred in.

But not especially herbal teas, and NEVER Licorice!

The Red mug likes mornings

And afternoon escapes.

Evenings are nice too, but only with Rocky Road ice cream and milk poured over.

The Red Mug is cheerful all the time.

Content to sit on the shelf when I don't have the heart,

and happy in the hand when I do.

I could probably learn a thing or two from The Red Mug.

Perhaps she'll whisper a few lessons

while I sip

steaming sweet chocolate

and peek at my little son

through

her

handle.

I hope so.

Really? You want to know?

Yesterday was idyllic.

There was warmth and light,
Snowfall and a Moose visit.
Candles,
Cookie decorating,
Popcorn for lunch.
Drawing and sewing projects to engage in at leisure.
Legos...

I worked on Bryce and Carolina's Christmas Stockings;
and tidied here for the addition of cousins and some new neighbors for dinner.

It was peaceful and perfect and a Holiday in every sense.

In fact, the last week (and hopefully the next) are represented by this serene picture.

I tried an Artisan bread recipe that actually turned out

And we built a gingerbread house.

Some critters discovered the Nativity

And others snuck into the house to play where it's warm.

But before you think you'd like my life,
I should probably round out your perspective a little bit.

My beloved husband and best friend has had to travel a lot lately.
He has provided for us in every necesity, but being our first Winter in the mounatins
and living more rustic than those living with conventional power and plumbing...
it's been a daily adventure of learning the quirks and techniques,
and also all the little hang-ups of Winterizing.

I mean,  firewood is a good start,
but what about discovering which pipes need insulating against freeze?
Well now we know.
How's our custom composting toilet working out?
I will spare you the details, but we've learned something about that one too.
There's more,
but I won't digress.
Suffice it to say, we've been learning a lot of these lessons without our capable dad.
Uncle Char- my "little" brother is near at hand, but I save him as one hoards a Wild card -
to be used only when in dire straits.

Many of these days start by going below the house to turn on a water valve
so I have water in the sink.
For the last 5 or 6 weeks I've been without hot water except what I heat on the stove.
And if the pipes have frozen (as was the case again today)
I have to fill pots of water (or I use my Wild card for that) outside and bring them in
for drinking and for dish and hand-washing.
I will impose on my brother up the hill once or twice a week for a shower,
but since it involves leaving the kids at home
(because I am not willing to drive up a curvy, unplowed, driveway), that's often enough
and then at night, and I will walk back home.
In the dark.
Singing Christmas carols with gusto!
(And trying not to slip and slide back down the hill).

There IS a cookie under there...... somewhere.

Before bed, I stoke the fire,
Shut off the generator which I sometimes run late in the day
to power my computer, a movie or two, the internet connection...
and Christmas tree lights.
Then I turn that water valve off,
remembering to flush water out of the system by yet another valve
before turning in.

 That's mostly it,
but just those couple unusual chores add a unique twist to my daily life.
And it sometimes feels like a lot when my hero isn't here to rescue his damsel.
Distressed or not,
I am frequently in need of rescue ;-D

But then again,
it's amazing to find out just what I'm capable of,
to find out how much my children pitch in,
and to train and correct my perspective
so that I can embrace even harrowing experiences as...
well,
as adventures, and memory-making.

And they are. We are having a GREAT time,
being together
laughing
(occasionally crying - and it's mostly me who's the cry-baby)
...and making memories.

SO.
You can have a piece of this pie if you want,
Just remember I didn't fill you in on the "IN-House Outhouse"

This life is a mixed bag that any of you gals could handle,
but would you WANT to.

As for me,
I have chose my lot.
And I am exceedingly content and fulfilled in it.
If you want a piece of the warmth and candlelight;
the snowflakes, moose visits, and mountain quiet........

You'll have to get your own.

I'm not trading.

For a Song

This is a little piece of artwork I whipped out the last two days.
Just because it was "whipped out" doesn't mean it was made without a great deal of thought and love. In fact, this one is particularly full of both love and thought - as well as a great deal of prayer.

I do love to draw and am learning to appreciate the paintbrush, but it's been a long journey to realize just WHY I create.

There are two reasons primarily.
The first is because it puts a song in my heart; the other is because I love to make other hearts sing.

I have been making stationary and drawing on commission for the last 10 years plus, but I have always been in turmoil about payment!
What to do - what to do?
How can I put a price on my baby?!

People don't understand (or like) the idea of paying for someone else's creativity, and it's awfully hard to charge by the hour on something like artwork.

Creative genius can well up and overflow from productivity to completion in a mere two hours, or it can take days.

Days
and days.

You artist type know.

After several years of deliberation and some failed attempts at solving this dilemma, I finally gave myself permission to draw and create, and give it all away for nothing more than that song I spoke of earlier.

Sometimes I have the pleasure to see the smile that pays for all that thought and love, and other times my heart sings for the Lord alone.

The later is the case this time.
The painting above will travel to Arizona as a gift for one of AJ's co-workers.

He and his wife gave birth to a beautiful and tiny daughter last Friday, but sweet Gabriella was 22 weeks premature and did not live long after.
(Please pray for their family as the Lord prompts)

I've never met Gabriella's parents or siblings, and anyway what would I say to someone who has just lost their child - their very heart?
I am not one for words (believe me!), but sometimes the Lord allows me the privilege of sharing my heart another way - like in this instance.

If it's possible to wrap a Hug from the Heavenly Father and mail it to Arizona, and if He sees fit to make me His hands for that purpose...
Well?
What better payment could I ever ask for!

There is no higher joy than the delight of creating as an expression of belonging to The Creator.

...Unless it's creating something just to make HIS heart sing:-)
