Darlin'........

(original courtesy of Katie Watkins photography)

You're ten years old today.

I knew it would go by in a wink, but still I was shocked when it did.

One day a round-faced toddler cautious of heights, cautious of snakes,
cautious.
cautious.
cautious.
The next day growing into a boy ready to conquer fears in any shape.
Any form.

Lover of life.

Dreamer of big unfathomable dreams.

You have vision.  And sometimes it's hard for you to remember all the other important things.  people.
in your dedicated forging ahead.
One tiny reminder whispering in your ear what is the truly valuable
and your course is adjusted within seconds.  Though no less determined.
I always stand in awe.
You bless me.

Zachary my botanist.  Cataloguing plant names,
flower names, berry and mushroom names, medicinal properties, and the poisonous varieties to avoid.
Machine fanatic you've always been, operating tractors since age three.

Remember the time you drove while daddy
stood on the box scraper
so you could  spread gravel on our driveway?

I do.  You must have been about 4,
and your smile says it all!

Oh Zachary!  It is bitter bitter sweet
watching you turn into a young man.

I am not ready to part with my round-faced toddler,
yet there are people who'd give their life and limb to watch their children grow up.
So I will choose to remember it's a privilege
to see every step over every new threshold.
It's a honor to be YOUR mom.
To witness the transformation from little boy to capable man.
I am so thankful for this opportunity!

And you...

You always have,
and you always will...

amaze me.

I love you Zachary Christian!

So thankful to be your
~Mom~

Lily Lippers and Moments that pass too quickly

"Lily Lippers..." she said.
Then, "Lily Leopard...?" no that's not it either.
"Lily Tiger... AH!
TIGER LILY!"

Susanna and the the McGillicutty trait.  The one inherited from me.  MY side of the family.
Affectionately and with humored reverence referenced by my maiden name
(which, by the way, isn't really McGillicutty)
The McGillicutty brain remembers things in gist's and catalogues them
by what they look like or sound similar to.

We're good at Pictionary.

I have the McGillicutty trait.  My brother Char.  Molly.
My son Clayton has it in spades!
This time Susanna was trying to remember the name of a wild flower.
It can be hard for outsiders to translate, but we on the in - we understand each other
almost perfectly.  It's almost like a code.  Crack it if you dare!

I wonder if Aloria will have the McGillicutty trait?

Miss "Crazy Hair" Mercy squeaky clean after a bath.

Don'tcha know that life is made up of moments?  And moments on moments?
We can't afford to miss these moments!

You can capture some pretty fun moments by spying on your little people.

In his last days as a single digit number, my 9 year old son Zachary built a sail boat.
He is our "Man with a plan".  His plans are usually bigger than our means or abilities,
but this time the entire project was executed and completed on his own (with some help from brother).

There were numerous obstacles discovered along the way
such as getting the boat to float upright.

But one thing was tried, then another, and like Edison and the first light bulb
Zachary ended with a long list of things that wouldn't work.

But by persistence he solved the puzzle and victory tasted Oh so sweet!

Maiden voyage

Last adjustments.

More moments to savor.

"Bye Folks!  See if you can't sneak a few moments of your own!"

The Doin's Around Here...

I love Summer for picture taking!  I am betrayed by my Picasa album where June shows over 1000 photos.
Because of that, I have to publish posts like these requiring very little written effort and a whole lot of time
to upload because of visual volume.

My children are just discovering my blog for themselves and  enjoy scrolling through the archives.
It makes all the memory-recording seem truly worthwhile!

This bunch was taken on a little walk down the drive.  Susanna requested this ribbon tied in her hair
and I took such pleasure in seeing it all day!

This guy was on his stomach hunting for frogs in a puddle.

Wild Roses are finally blooming way up here on the mountain.  Twinkles of pink everywhere.
I am gifted with daisy chains and bouquets in a rainbow of colors every day - spring and summer
have finally arrived and at the same time no less!

You may have to dig a little...

This beautiful lake is balm for a weary heart.
Watching my very own sweet candy-colored children
play with their cousins in this lake makes a nearly-perfect evening every time!

My beloved reminds me that this tiredness and my feelings of defeat are
part of every new-baby-roller-coaster-ride we've embarked upon.
Sometimes it helps to have that balanced perspective which reassures me I'm not going crazy.
I suppose that at 2 months past the babymoon, interrupted sleep is catching up.

My sis Hannah provided a picnic for this outing, and Oh how I thank her
for doing all the dinner-thinking!  It gave my hands and brain a short reprieve.

Isn't Watermelon summer's Pop Corn?  It's almost a meal in itself when you just need
something quick to fill a number of bottomless pits, and the children think that
eating Watermelon is a party all it's own.

Besides food for... for.... for a LOT of us, Hannah provided me with some precious fellowship as well.

She is at that 4-children-5-and-under season which by my recollection is more hairy than the one I'm in now.
She understands my hard days.
And I can relate to hers.

It was good to recall the frustrations of the day and discover they were
actually kind of funny in retrospect.

Too bad I can't see forward to that more often when I'm in the moment.

We laughed about trying to bake bread in an oven with an unlit pilot.  It doesn't get too hot that way.
The bread doesn't really bake too well.

We laughed about cleaning out the girls sock drawers and finding... a Squirrels tail?
Oh yeah.  You can bet there was a good reason for keeping that in there!

She confided to me that when telling her husband she was struggling,
he asked "what's wrong?"
she stated simply: "everything."

"That's a lot of things to go wrong." he tenderly said.
and her answer to that was "I KNOW!"

Me too Hannah.  I know.

We watched boys fish.
We watched girls get as wet as we'd let them.
We watched babies and tried to keep the mosquitoes off them.

We chuckled at how silly all that turmoil seems after the fact.  But real nonetheless.

The world comes down around your ears just as the baby needs to nurse.
It's something you can count on, but it still feels crushing when it occurs.

I really do understand.

It's good when that frenzied moment passes and we can look backwards on it with a grin.

"That wasn't so bad"  we can say now that we're through it.
And it's true. It wasn't so bad.

Most especially if I used self-control in the heat of the moment and didn't say or do
things to taint the fun of later story-telling.

And if there's a friend listening who can relate.

And if the stories can be told while both friends nurse hungry babies and bat at bugs.

And if we may watch our children do all the things that make childhood so spectacular!

In that case even the hard days should be remembered.
They are somewhat softened in the retelling
so as to filter out the despair and illuminate the hilarious.

Some people call it denial.  I don't.  I call it choosing to worship.
Just look my way and you'll see a silhouette of a woman with both arms stretched out
pointing - waving wildly perhaps - towards Gods glory.
HE is faithful.  HE is long suffering.  And even on days that seem lost we can choose
to glorify Him.

We might have to dig a little; do some detective work and sleuth it out,
but it's worth it to find these sparkling snippets of joy!
