Birthday Boy

How can it be already?!!
One year and my earliest walker he is.
Kind of fitting for an 8th child, don't you think?

From the moment he was born and it was clear he wouldn't even
fit into the sweet little newborn jams I had lovingly bought and dreamed of
my baby wearing...
I secretly knew I was going to miss that New Baby stage with this 10-pound-plus
son of mine already determined to make his mark on the world of men.

This morning the boy awoke to a room full of "punch balloons" and some special gifts.
He was most enthralled with the cell phone that his sis Carolina thoughtfully gave him.
I'm don't believe it left his hand except for lunch and naps.
Miles was holding it when Daddy left for work and was holding it when he returned
home in the evening!

Miles had berries and yogurt on pancakes for birthday breakfast
and then a lot of playing with balloons and Mega Blocks and of course - that cell phone :-)

In the evening Uncle Charlie was here and able to celebrate with us.
Miles was pretty stoic about the whole thing.  Getting older is serious business, don'tcha know?

Hangin' with the men is definitely where it's at though!

And then there was cake....

Yep.
Cake is pretty much the crowning glory of awesomeness.

Well Happy Birthday little man!
Although I'm excited to watch you make your own mark on the world of men,
I'm praying you know that the greatest you can ever be
is a servant and friend of the King Jesus.

If no one ever sees you, or knows you, or appreciates you, it doesn't matter.
This world in not a kingdom that lasts and people will never value the things
that matter most to Him.  You are precious to Him and He loves you.
Love Him.

Daddy and I love you dear one~

Brothers

These people who share our blood,

they are the dearest gifts on earth.

Seeking a heart of purpose to cultivate the friendships available underneath our own roof...

right under our noses :-)

Every altercation has the same root: selfishness.

To treat the other as we would want to be treated, that is the uniting theme.

Ever the same in any relationship we value.

Thoughtful kindness.

Respect of feelings. Respect of space. Respect of ideas.

It is a fine line to walk,  knowing when to joke and poke fun - in good fun - for the fun of all...

and knowing when to stop before crossing the line of "no longer fun" for all.

Self control. Preferring the other over yourself.

Because we know that we'll be in that other persons shoes at some time

and what a privilege to have the assurance that that guy - your brother - has your back.

True friendship.

Firsts...

First  quilts completed!

Beautiful bright colors for learning the sewing machine, and hand quilted tops - lots of firsts here!
I think they turned out fabulous.
The girls let me hang them on some of the bare walls in this house
and I just adore the pop of sunshine they add to my winter :-)

Nicely done ladies.

And this... this is another first.
First teeth for Carolina to lose.  She is beaming, can you see it?

Miles too, is getting in on "firsts", but I don't have any good pictures of him.
In the last week he's gotten the hang of walking, just in time for his 1 year birthday
in a few days!

First time stunts and life experiences are on constant rotation around here.
I'm so glad because (besides potty training), I could happily relive my own excitement
of my children's "first-times" for the rest of my life :-)

Big Miles and the Dropping Game

This is Big Miles.

He sits at the big table now.

In his new chair.

He likes to eat Peanut Butter and Jam sandwiches now-a-days.

And pancakes when his sister makes them.

It looks like Miles has been eating berries in his yogurt today.

One of his favorite things to do lately is draw with the big kids.

He shows me his pencil, wanting me to see just what a big guy he is to be drawing!

He knows he is pretty smart.

Here's a new game Miles likes to try.

In this game, you drop something and wait to see who will pick it up for you first.

Big brothers and sisters are best for this game.  They love to oblige.

"Mama, it's down there."  Says Miles.

Miles forgets that mama doesn't play this game.

She never wins.

Someone clued mama in about 12 years ago,

that Baby would always drop more times than Mama could pick up.

Poor Miles.

Oh well.

Miles loves mama anyway.

Next time he'll drop something for Zack or Susie to pick up!

Precious Inquisition

He sat there silently on the Wingbacked chair in my bedroom,
his blanket waded up on crossed legs.

Perhaps past due to un-train the thumb habit, I don't feel bad,
because I know these years are short
and that
he won't carry his blanket around with him
or suck his thumb forever.

We visit some.

I am preoccupied with hanging clothes in the closet.
He, content to think deep thoughts while watching.

He pops his thumb from his mouth just long enough to ask me

"So. God just said 'Let there be rocks', and *poof* there were?"

"Yes" I reply.  "That's right."

Back in goes his thumb.

Then out again.
"And God said 'Let there be trees', and *poof* there were trees?"

"Yep.  That's so."  I say.

With shorter duration between thumb-pops and questions I hear:

"So God said 'Let there be sky' and *poof* there was sky?"
"And God said 'Let there be animals' and *poof* there were animals?"
"You mean, God said 'Let there be a moon' and *poof* there was a moon?"
"Did God say 'Let there be water" and *poof* there was water?"

I can't help the stray thought that
I don't remember ever using *poof* in my retelling of Creation events,
but I like the descriptive image it conjures.

"And God said 'Let there be gold', and *POOF* there was gold?"...

Loving the constant stream of valuable thought here, and provoking my own mind
to chew on a few new ideas, I answer yes, yes, and yes again.

"Yes" I say,
"Isn't it amazing that God's word is so powerful that it can create anything?"

Thumb in, now silent for a brief pause as he chews on these ponderings of his.
Out it pops for one final question.

"And did God say 'Let there be stores' and *poof* there were stores?"

HIS Love-Letter

His love-letter is written across our lives
daily
in every soul-nourishing detail.

We often pass by it uncelebrated
because we expect it
and then promptly take it for granted.

{{Let it not be so.}}

{Just a little reminder to me
that God has called me Beloved,
and writes me love-letters every day.

Each dimple and expression that thrills my heart,
every beauty that takes my breath away,
in silence and in song,
in provision
and
in emptiness...
He is all.

And He
loves
me.}

Creative Explosion

The dad was on a little business trip not long ago, and while he was away
we jumped into hyperdrive and knocked out a few projects that have been
on my want-to-do list.

One of the projects I'd been dreaming up for the last year and a half, was putting
some kind of light-colored false wall in this cubby of our entertainment center.
Since it's not full of a big screen TV, it feels akin to a black hole and I'd really like to
see it become a reading nook of sorts when it grows up :-)

I picked up some cedar fence boards (because they're cheap) and my
two very capable boys cut and sanded them, and built a free-standing panel.

Wow.  You know, I am so amazed and blessed by these guys who are becoming so able!

Below is a picture of our trial fit.

Completing the panel, the boys measured for trim and holes for access to outlets.
Zachary did all my figures and cutting, and by golly!  He did a fantastic job!
I'm pretty sure there's no way I could have tackled this project alone, and I'm
certain my outlet holes would have been cut in the wrong places.

Thank you Zack!
And thank you Clay, for all that sanding you did.  Cedar fencing never looked
so beautiful!

The fellas let me help some, so I applied a whitewash to the wood to lighten it further.
Then too, Zack did such a great job cutting the trim to fit just so, but because of
my inexperienced false wall-applying abilities, there was a certain amount of
shimming that had to be done in order to get it all tidy.
Just don't look too closely - any discord would be all my own responsibility.

And Ta-da!
I should have taken a final picture with my laborers in it, shouldn't I? Oops.

Wonderful wonderful wonderful!  I'm so pleased.  Now to add a photo canvas
and maybe a reading lamp?  Hmm... Creative juices still flowing on this one :-)

Meanwhile, there were other endeavors en process.

The big girls are each working on a mini quilt as a first go at piecing a quilt.
And they had had quite a lot of help as well  - the kind of help that makes you keep your
scissors off the ground and watch your cord!

Miles is just big enough now that his little hands reach up to grip the table tops, and
whatever happens to be near the edge is considered fair game haha!

Pretty stuff going on here.  Can't wait to produce pictures of the finished creations!

The other thing the boys did for me during the week, was to handle all the shop work
pertaining to a school assignment "station" where I wanted to hang clipboards permanently.

It takes a lot of extra effort for me (and use of a limited supply of brain cells) to figure
how to measure, cut, and hang things strait and evenly spaced. I've never been accused
of perfectionistic tendencies. Ha!
The boys were a lot of help where those things were concerned, and I wanted to do
it for the dad - if he (who notices such) was going to have to walk by it every day :-)

Bryce and Carolina and Aloria made stars with me while the boys were working
in the shop.  They then painted them, and we glittered them all!   Low and behold...
accent art to make the school assignments sparkle!

I love.

We are kind of getting a rainbow theme going in this house, aren't we!
And now, there is glitter everywhere and a few more stray stars to enjoy here and there as well.

Also, I made a first attempt at chalkboard art!  I just love hand lettering.
It's so therapeutic to be artistic on something that feels predictable like
a word or letter.
I definitely want to try my hand at it again before long.

Well friends, this is just the tip of the iceberg as regards the
sawdust and fabric scraps that are flying these days.

Isn't it a wonder that the Lord gives us the pleasure of creating, just as He
Himself delights in creating?  I sometimes marvel with the kids that while God
created everything out of nothing, we have to use the ingredients He has already
made when we get creative :-)

And because this post is a little short on baby faces (some of my favorite creations),
here are a couple to close on.

Love you all!
